Build a career in
Mechanical & Product Design.

Product design is where a drawing has to survive contact with a machine shop. A model that looks right and cannot be made is a failed design.

The work

What this work actually involves

This path teaches parametric modelling, assemblies, and the tolerancing language that makes a design manufacturable — then puts a printed prototype of your own part in your hand so you find out what your design got wrong.

The manufacturing belt around Gurugram, Manesar and Bhiwadi runs on exactly this skill set.

Roles

Roles this leads to

RoleWhat you would do
Design EngineerModel parts and assemblies to a manufacturable standard
Product Design EngineerOwn a product from concept through to production drawings
CAD EngineerProduce and maintain the design data a manufacturer works from
Detailing EngineerProduce dimensioned, toleranced drawing sets

A good fit if you are

  • A mechanical engineering student or graduate
  • A production or quality engineer moving into design
  • A draughtsperson wanting 3D and tolerancing skills
  • Targeting automotive, machine-building or product firms

Probably not the right start if

  • You want simulation as your primary work — look at the analysis programmes within this path
  • You are focused on buildings rather than products — see BIM

Frequently asked
